Shaped by Telegraph Book of the Year, The Great Auk: It’s Extraordinary Life, Hideous Death and Mysterious Afterlife, this talk will discuss the sad but salutary story of this historic bird.
Tim Birkhead, the speaker, is a Fellow of the Royal Society and emeritus professor of behaviour and evolution at the University of Sheffield. His research on promiscuity and sperm competition in birds re-shaped our understanding of bird mating systems. In addition, Tim has maintained one of the longest running studies of a North Atlantic seabird, the guillemot —a close relative of the great auk — on the Welsh Island of Skomer since 1972.

Bayeux-mania has taken Britain by storm with the loan of the Bayeux Tapestry to the British Museum. Michael Lewis and Dave Musgrove will give an introduction to this wonder of the medieval world and attempt to answer why the embroidery fascinates British people so much.
Michael Lewis is Curator, Bayeux Tapestry exhibition, at the British Museum. David Musgrove is Content Director of History Extra magazine. Together they have written the best-selling book, The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry, publisher Thames & Hudson (republished and updated 2026).

Thanks to Jurassic Park, Walking with Dinosaurs and other computer-generated imagery, we are familiar with prehistoric animals brought to life on television and cinema screens. But how do scientists know anything about how these animals moved, fed and sensed their environments?
In this talk Professor Emily Rayfield will explore how far palaeontologists can go in reconstructing the behaviour of extinct animals. She is Professor of Palaeobiology in the School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol.
